Samuel Franklin Jamison was a combat veteran in the Civil War. In spite of the fact that he believed the issues could have been settled peaceably, he voluntarily enlisted in the hope of keeping the war from coming to his family's hometown. He was engaged in fierce battles in Fredricksburg and Chancellorsville, Virginia and witnessed first hand the carnage and slaughter of war when Americans fight Americans.
